A Day in The Life of ROV Pilots

Salty ocean wind, sea waves reflecting the sunshine, working on the wobble vessel... today, we take you on the sea and join a day in the life of ROV pilot.

【The Prep】
On each offshore mission, the ROV is the first on the list to get set and be ready. Usually, our ROV pilots will team up with engineers to ‘decor’ the ROV’s interior, this will help them bond with ROV before the mission. Thanks to our ROV open interface, we fit most of the missions by rearranging the ROV interior, like adding a manipulator with a 5-axis or 7-axis, a SSS scanner or a sonar, or a high-pressure pump, etc, you name it. Let the ROV ready to work without hassle. Including meeting with clients to be on the same page, the preparation will take about 3 weeks, that’s where the pilots’ job start.

【Daylight Duties】
DWTEK’s Sunny Bright offshore vessel allows the ROV pilots to work at sea without returning to port. Usually, a day of an ROV pilot on the vessel starts with waking up at 6 o’clock, after having breakfast, then joining a TOOLBOX meeting at 7, to review the schedule about the safety reminder of dos and don’ts, and daily progress. Then as a routine, check all the equipment, ROV from inside and out, connectors, visual confirmation, and power on.

【Mission On】
When the currents are stabilized gradually around 1.7-1.8 knots, the pilot team will be set and get ready to work. Once ROV flies under the sea and does the scanning and examining, the pilots will highly focus on the monitor, and keep tracking. Usually, one shift takes around 5-6 hours.

【End of the day】
Flying an ROV is no easy task, after each mission pilots will have to review the progress of the day, make a report and corrections, and if lucky, they might count the stars and catch a breath on the service vessel.
